TOOL
Name:     Consume  version 3.0

Date Published:  2005

Brief Description:  Consume is a software program that predicts the amount of fuel consumption and emissions from the burning of logged units, piled debris, and natural fuels based on weather data, the amount and fuel moisture of fuels, and a number of other factors.

Complete Description:  CONSUME is a user-friendly software application designed for resource managers with some working knowledge of Microsoft Windows® applications. Land managers and researchers input fuel characteristics, lighting patterns, fuel conditions, and environmental conditions, then CONSUME outputs fuel consumption and emissions by combustion phase. CONSUME 3.0 is designed to import data directly from the Fuel Characteristic Classification System (FCCS), and the output is formatted to feed other models and provide usable outputs for burn plan preparation and smoke management requirements. Additionally, a user’s manual and tutorial are available. CONSUME can be used for most forest, shrub and grasslands in North America. There are now four equation sets in Consume 3.0: Activity fuels (mostly unchanged from Consume 2.1), Natural fuels - Boreal, Natural fuels - Southern and Natural fuels – Western. Users specify an equation set in Consume by specifying the fuelbed type (Activity or Natural) and the ecoregion of their specific fuelbed. The equations for estimating consumption from piles are unchanged from Consume 2.1. Consume 3.0 has not been officially released, but a beta version is available for testing purposes only. It can be downloaded from the Fire and Environmental Research Applications Team (FERA) website (http://www.fs.fed.us/pnw/fera/). Please continue to use Consume 2.1 for fuel consumption and emissions calculations. The final release date for Consume 3.0 is expected to be in November 2007.
