PROJECT
Name:  Effect of Fuel Treatments on Wildfire Severity

Date Published:  3/25/2002

Brief Description:  This project investigated the severity of four recent wildfires that burned into existing fuel treatment areas. Treatments included repeated prescribed fires, single prescribed fires, debris removal, and mechanical thinning both with and without slash removal. Further information at: www.cnr.colostate.edu/frws/research/westfire/FinalReport.pdf

Complete Description:  This project will compare the severity of future wildfires in adjacent treated and untreated stands. The time-dependency for fuel collection of this ephemeral data has been proven through previous experience with the proposed methods. The results of this research would provide information on the effectiveness of fuel treatments for management jurisdictions. The additional information produced by this project would also support and improve a currently funded assessment of the generality of fuel treatment effectiveness.
